As Kiera was getting on and off the potty repeatedly, as is the norm, I was telling Jen that other than that time 4 months ago (UGH!), when Kiera went potty two times in one day, we have not been successful at the whole potty thing. She hasn't gone since. Stubborn, stubborn girl! :) As Jen and I were chatting about "potty stuff" and kids, I noticed Kiera had gone back into the bathroom and closed the door. The little imp! :) I went in to find Kiera, once again, on the potty. This time she had a little light in her eyes, which I didn't connect until later. When she saw me she exclaimed, "PEEEE!" I looked down just in time to actually see my little girl pee! I was soooo excited that I screeched saying, "Good Job Kiera!" I think that I probably broke poor Jen's ear! Sorry hon! Anyway, I went through the whole praise thing, and getting her a treat for going potty.
Now, with Aiden, 1 M&M was good enough. He never questioned it. Not once. Kiera is another story. She anxiously awaited her M&M, only to be utterly disappointed by the one tiny little M&M in her little tiny hand. She looked at me with this, "You've got to be kidding me" look and promptly told me in no uncertain terms, "LOTS!" I tried to reassure her that one M&M was quite enough, but I wasn't convincing her at all. Now, not wanting her to be disappointed in her whole potty experience, and wanting her to be motivated to actually go again, I finally gave in and prayed that one more M&M would suffice. She looked happily down at her two M&Ms and squealed, "TWOS M&MS! LOTS!" And immediately put both in her mouth.
Fast forward to this morning. Kiera woke up and was dry. This has happened a few times, so I wasn't really surprised and really have never thought anything of it. But, in light of the successful potty experience we had yesterday, I asked her if she wanted to try to use the potty. Her first response was a very positive, "NO!" Until I reminded her that she got treats if she went potty. She thought about that for a split second and then was up and running to the potty. I got her on the potty and she went, AGAIN!! Not much, just a teeny tiny bit, but still it was as Kiera says, "PEE!" Praise, praise, praise, diaper, wash, treat.
As she is eating her yummy treats, she starts to squat, bending her knees and leaning over slightly, and tells me, "Mommy, PEE!" I look at her and ask her if she has to go again. I am thinking, "The little turkey just got off the potty 2 minutes ago!" Hmmmmm...she just wants a treat...again. But, I don't want to discourage her, and she anxiously tells me again, squatting down a little farther, "Mommy, PEE!" I try to get her to walk into the bathroom, but she just continues to squat there, I guess afraid that if she stands up to walk, she will let loose. So, I quickly pick her up under her arms, and run her into the bathroom, she still in the squatting position. She is still just in her diaper, because, well, she just got done. I take off her diaper, lift her up on the potty, and AGAIN!!!! So...Praise, praise, praise, diaper, wash, treat.
We continue with our morning as usual, get dressed, eat breakfast, brush teeth all before having to take Aiden to preschool. Of course, we are brushing our teeth with 5 minutes before we need to be in the van to leave, and Kiera says, "Mommy, PEE!" GOOD GOD!!!! I look at the time, cringe, and get her on the potty....and she pees AGAIN!!!!! So....praise, praise, praise, diaper wash, treat. We run to the van and actually do get to preschool on time.
After drop off, I decide that Kiera, going potty 3 times within 45 minutes, needs pull ups. So we go off to Target. There is a Starbucks in Target, and I thought I would treat myself to a nice little coffee before we do our shopping. As we are leaving the Starbucks, me very excited about my coffee that I am about to sample, and Kiera yells, "Mommy, PEE!" REALLY?!?!?!? So off we go to Target's public restroom. We pull the jeans down, take the diaper off, and I hold her over the seat and low and behold...the little light shines in those big blue eyes again and, "PEE!" So...praise, praise, praise, diaper, wash, uh-oh....no treat, in Target, not prepared. CRAP! Kiera is looking at me with those gorgeous eyes, so proud of herself and saying, "Treat?" Thank the good Lord, praise Him, I am in Target, they give away FREE cookies! So I say, "How about a yummy cookie for a treat?" Enough said. She LOVES cookies. We were good to go!
Back from Target, "PEE!" Praise, praise, praise, pull up, wash, treat. And we put on her brand spanking new Dora pull-ups! Very exciting! She loves them and feels like such a big girl!
After lunch "PEE!" Praise, praise, praise, pull up, wash, treat.
After nap, "PEE!" Praise, praise, praise, pull up, wash, treat.
After supper, "PEE!" Praise, praise, praise, pull up, wash, treat.
During bath, "PEE!" Praise, praise, praise, back in bath, get pj's on, treat.
So.....is it 16 M&Ms? and 1 cookie later, she is down for the night, sleeping peacefully, despite the extra sugar she consumed today!
Now, I am not naive enough to think that this is the way it is going to be from now on. We will surely have relapses, and days, weeks, months (groan), where she will stubbornly refuse, (she is a stubborn girl), but gracious, was today an awesome day on the potty! And so suddenly! What a happy day! I am one proud Mommy!
