Growing butterflies!

This summer, the kids and I conducted an extremely cool science project....we grew butterflies! We sent away for the larvae and anxiously awaited their arrival. They came to us in little cups with their own food. We watched them for a week as they ate, and ate, and ate some more. Then they attached themselves to the lid of the cup and spun themselves into cocoons. It was pretty amazing to actually see them spin. After all 10 of our larvae turned into cocoons, we transferred them to the butterfly garden. After another 10 days, the butterflies started to hatch from their cocoons! The kids loved watching the transformation. Sadly, once all of our butterflies were hatched, we needed to let them fly away.

The neighbor kids came over to join us in the excitement of letting them fly.

Peeking in...some of the butterflies weren't as willing to leave their temporary home as we thought. It took a little coaxing to get them to all come out!

Josh finally reached in to gently extract one of the last butterflies. Aiden attempted to hold one too, but the silly butterfly would not cooperate.
